Rosanjin Kitaoji

Rosanjin Kitaoji (1883-1959) was known to be one of Japan's famous artists from the 20th century. He crafted various pieces of arts including asian kitchenware. Rosanjin Kitaoji following an artistic path while never having any form of education in art. His inspirations came primarily from both his natural surrounding environments and the10,000 pieces of artwork that he collected.


Rosanjin's first began experimenting with decorated ceramics in 1915 by hypothesizing on the relationship between food and the design of the kitchenware. He later opened an art gallery in Japan where he served food on his decorated ceramics.


When the Great Tokyo earthquake hit Japan, his arts were destroyed. He later went into crafting pottery which surpassed the classical forms of Chinese pottery. His work became famous for their simple and original designs. He is also a master in Japanese calligraphy so he started incorporating them into his pottery.
